How to bugger it up

This rod was supposed to be a Para-15 with 2 tips. After a week of testing on my new oven, I put the cane in and promptly over cooked it. I was going to ammonia tone it, but that won't be necessary now.

Then I didn't follow through with the plane and broke off the tip of one of the strips... too much to recover from, and being the last of my cane right now, I had to dig through the scrap pile to find something that would work. Then I had to remember how much I over cooked...

Well, I'm all done at Rock Creek Cattle Company. I am now finalizing getting ready to hit the road and finish getting photographs and research for my book on Cutthroat. I did a similar trip last fall, but need to re-shoot a few sub species to get enough publishable photos. And, if things go to a semblance of a decent schedule, I will have some time to mess around and fish for "fun" for Steelhead and Salmon on the West Coast--probably in Oregon. I am leaving tommorrow for Beaver...

I could never talk Dave Engerbretson out of his silk fly lines or catgut leaders. Framed Flies

Well folks, I took a break from rod making and ferrule ruining to finish a project I had laying in wait. It was to frame a couple of flies. The frame is mahogony coated with teak oil. The top fly is a Grey Ghost and the bottom is a green Highlander. This was my first attempt at tieing a full dress salmon fly. Close, I guess. It's not done yet as I will use the glass and some spacers to create a shadow...

A day on THE Rock Creek, Montana

Went and fished THE Rock Creek, yesterday, since I got a day off at the last minute. The water is down to about 20 percent of what it was when I was there in June. Couldn't believe that. Below are a couple pics. from the trip. I was mostly just fishing my newest creation, and messing with my camera. The fishing was decent. Mostly smaller fish in the 8-10-inch range, but fiesty guys none-the-less.

Opening day on Rock Creek

Yesterday was the opener for our little Rock Creek (not the one you read about) that flows through the ranch. I took it upon myself to do a little exploration through the meadow section and down through the canyon. There wasn't much for fish, but it was pretty. There has only been a year-round flow of water in the creek for three years, now, after Mr. Foley bought the ranch, and didn't drain the creek to grow alfalfa. Because of the recent addition of this stream to fish populations...

22 inches long, 11 1/2 inches in girth!!! The biggest fish I've caught in this stream! And I did it with an 8', 5 wt., 3/2 bamboo rod (and a lot of luck...)

It's been a while since we talked and as a huge fan and fisher of your rods I am curious to see if you have something new cooking in the rod shop!? Without a doubt, all of the rods I own which you made for me (they are a bunch) are my favorites and owning a both Mortised and Cholla, I am just jonesin' to see if your expirimenting on anything new. If not, not worries, but figured I'd ask. Sorry, I've been out of touch a little as of late...just moved to Jackson...

Small stream get-away

It's not that my life is all that difficult, you understand, but on occasion I seek the relief of our local mountains, always in the context of trout, bamboo rods and dry flies. The sound of living water refreshes,the softness of light filtered through green leaves soothes, and the quickness of wild trout invigorates all my senses. I don't know if I'm suffering from cabin fever or spring fever but I'm feeling a powerful itch to get my feet wet, whether I catch anything or not. On my way home from Denver last weekend it looked like the Arkansas is pretty much free from winter's clutches. The Rio Grande is still pretty icy even with the warm weather.
