Alfie,
You wouldn't need a binder to bundle up the sections for heat treating, as I said, I just do it by hand. As far as an oven goes, you can hang a piece
of black galvanized pipe from the ceiling with straps or wire. Leave it loose enough so that you can rotate the pipe by hand. Get it threaded at both ends for
caps and drill 1/8th inch holes in the center of each cap. Put the cane into the pipe and cap both ends. Using a torch with a good blue flame, slowly rotate

Am embarking on my first rod so am in the process of gathering tools and was trying to stay clear of a binder.

I can get the PET sleeving here... guess I'll still have to go the way of an oven and see if i can scrounge around for odds and ends for a binder.

yamame,

The braided sleeve that I use can withstand temperatures of about 230 degrees so it's not suitable for heat treating in my opinion. I just bundle the
pieces together and bind by hand to heat treat. I've never used the method you mentioned to heat treat, flaming the inside, but enough people do it that
way so I'm sure it works fine. I do my cane at 200 degrees for about 6 hours then I turn my oven up to 375 for about 20 minutes.

read with interest you post. Have not read Ray's book but would like find out more on this method of 'binding':

can you use this method for the initial heat treating of the untapered strips?

or if I used D Hayashida's method of flaming the inside of the culm be sufficient that I don't need to heat treat?

Dave, I've seen various heat/temp combos for curing Epon which all seem to work. I use 4 hrs. at 180*. Never thought of twisted rods, but this method
sure would fit the bill for a sort of odd shaped shaft. Because of it's low cost, the experienced builder could use it in unusual applications, but it
would be great for the guy who makes 1 or 2 rods a year.
You are right in that the sleeve is woven just like the flytying stuff. I strip the sleeve off before heat treating just so it comes off easier. I did have
a blank that I had to scrape the sleeve off of and though I'd rather not have to do it, it wasn't that hard. I have been toying with the idea of
resleeving the blank after I scrape the glue off to heat treat the Epon. I would make a rack to fit my oven and after the glues cured, just save the sleeve to
bind the...
