Posts: 31 03/05/09 09:47:22	Where are we? This might have been asked before but I don't feel like digging through the past posts to find out. It appears we have a few Colorado Front Range people participating on our forum. So I'll start it off. My shop is located in Longmont Colorado inside the Laughing Grizzly Fly Shop 10675 Ute Hwy Longmont CO. NW corner of Hwy 66 and 287. I'm really fortunate to have this space. Gives me a chance to display my rods in the shop and also talk to anglers about bamboo. I don't keep regular hours but if you would like to stop by and shoot the "shovel stuff" I can be reached on my cell. 303-810-4538 Where are you? Posts: 18 03/05/09 13:42:34	I live 4 1/2 miles outside the town limits of a little town in the mountains of western Maryland(Clear Spring- pop. around 350).The towns only claim to fame is that the 1st National Pike>US Rt 40 runs through the center of town.Maybe to be a little clearer, it's 95 miles NW of Baltimore and 90 miles NW of Washington,D.C. Posts: 56 03/05/09 14:32:05	Thanks for asking Frank, I'm in Monte Vista, Colorado, halfway between Pueblo and Durango, two hours from Taos. I farm potatoes for a living and have been building rods for my own mental health for just over a year now. I have a great shop area next to the house that was built out of adobe for food storage by my grandparents. There is some mighty good fly fishing down this way on the Rio Grande and the Conejos. I'm planning to be in Longmont in the next coupla weeks, maybe I'll take you up on your kind offer. Eat more potatoes! Ray

Posts: 31 03/05/09 17:39:55	Hey Will, I'm from Edgewater MD but have been out here in Colorado since 1974. Everytime I go back to visit I try to get up and fish Big Hunting Creek at Thurmont. Last time I was there my son caught his first trout on Big Hunting during the 17 year Cicada outbreak. What a day! Frank

Don't make cane, often don't make sense but I figure if I can have learned to put up with myself then tolerating everybody else is a cakewalk. Posts: 12 03/06/09 00:35:26	I live in Lone Tree, Colorado. My wife and I are so fortunate to have a cabin in Raymond, Colorado (about halfway between Lyons and Estes Park). The Middle St. Vrain Creek runs in front of the cabin. Our dream is to move to the mountains some day. Since June of last year I have been on assignment in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I am working on the Masdar development, a green city in the world's most unsustainable place. I had an offer to go fishing with a local. He asked me if I had any fishing gear with me. When I told him no, he said no problem as people fish off a boat with a line and hook! They retrieve the fish by wrapping the line around their hand. What I wouldn't give for a Rocky Mountain stream and a bamboo rod! I will never take for granted what I have in colorful Colorado. Can't wait to return home. Craig (st_vrain)

I've been fishing Big Hunting Creek for 40 years and it's one of my favorite streams.It's only about a 40 minute drive from Clear Spring(the drive was about 1/2 that when I was living in Hagerstown).The only thing I don't like about it is it can get really crowded on weekends.I generally like to go on a weekday when there is very seldom more than a handful of people fishing. Although I grew up in the Northwest (Oregon) and spent most of my later years there (Washington), I, like many others, used to live in Colorado. I spent my Viet Nam era forced military service in Colorado Springs and lived in Manitou Springs. After release, My Ex-wife and I lived near the little town of Raymond. They called the middle St. Vrain a river when I lived there, but it is little more than a creek until the snow melts. We were 4.5 miles off the main road at a place called Conifer Hil. Later, my current wife and I lived in Greeley. I will always treasure catching foot long trouts in those little mountain creeks you could strep across. - Larry Lohkamp

Posts: 140 03/13/09 11:25:47	Well, I'm pretty much homeless while trying to finish my book on Cutthroat. Hard to find jobs that let you travel when you want, and pay you lots of money to afford gas But, I am originally from Buffalo, Wyo., just like ol' Mike Peck. We grew up and learned to fly-fish together on the local streams and lakes in the Bighorns--most of which are fishless, so we just made forts instead. It was kinda funny how Mike and I got in to cane. I started fishing old rods about my jr. year in high school, and rebuilding them in college. Mike decided to buy all the rod-making equipment while in college and soon was turning out fine cane rods. I got his second one! Since then we have evolved as rod-makers, and travel anywhere but the Bighorns, so we can catch fish! Now, I spend time in Colorado, and Wyoming mostly. I travel so much however, that I am rarely anywhere for more than a month--either crashing on friend's couches or camping out. Right now, I'm in Montana, heading to Jackson Hole, then the Bighorns, then Colorado, then likely turn around in a month and head back to Montana. We'll see what happens. I'll be fishing cane for sure! Mike and I getting ready to fish my first rod for the first time. Ol' Mikey searching for elk in the Bighorns. Mike's second rod with a Shortnose Gar I caught in Florida! Ariell and I catching native Yellowstone Cutties. Last Edited By: Curley 03/13/09 12:01:02. Edited 1 time.

Native searun cutthroat have been my favorite quarry since the 1950's, pursued with bamboo and antique reels - my favorite way to spend what spare time I have available! Greg

(My other grandmother grew up on a ranch in Colorado, so we went out there every summer to visit family.) Most of my fishing now is in the northeast, upstate New York, New England and New Jersey, but my daughter is going to school in Colorado Springs this fall and I plan to be out there a lot more often than she would like.
