Bright on blondes.
Dark on brunettes. Most of my rods are flamed so... |

I fit what the customer wants.
But for me I would pick a dark wood like rosewood or burr walnut. Spalted looks cool to. |

huh?
You make hardware out of wood? Pictures please! Yes I agree it's what the customer wants. It's up to us to steer (or is it stear? I get so confused...) him in the right direction. What if he wanted pink wraps and he wanted you to sign your name to the rod? You gonna do it? Just askin'? Just what is the price we sell ourselves out to? Hey a new poll question! And Joe...Garrison's still dead. He can't vote here. So is Bronze dark or bright? Jus' askin'. I think it's darker than brighter but I'm all ears. Hell, this pole's neck and neck and the sweat is drippin' in my eyes! |

I like everything except the reel seat hardware to be black, tho I do a black cap and ring every now and then just to remind myself that I don't like it. I
can make it look good, but it's a nuisance and doesn't hold up as well as I want it to even if I coat it, which I do.
john Dave, you gonna give rod photography lessons someday? |

I really appreciate the vintage look of an old Payne...

But I like the idea of pretty much no maintenance and every thing matches now and in 50 years...
John... That's a great idea for my new books but your "grandfathered in" my friend..."-)
I also like green tipped black...

The eye of the beholder | #10

I'm still shopping lathes and wire formers so for now I'm paying others to do my "dirty" work--and actually shelling out extra for deep
bluing but, for me, blue's not true unless at least half's been rubbed off the nickel-silver slideband and cap by a few seasons' worth of mounting
and removing crusty old Medalists with pillared arbors and Gems with a brass foot and nickel-plated horseshoe latch. Conversely, bright don't look right to
me either--until it starts gettin' that seriously stream-worn patina. Regardless, I laud Troutgetter for his redoubtable formula: Bright for blondes and
dark for brunettes. They're all great lays--for laying out lines to the fish we seek.
Speak of true blue--have any of The Bamboo Rod Room's old-Pflueger pfans cottoned onto the near knock-off of the Medalist's original, low-profile, cast foot that Bill Franke at One-Pfoot is now meticulously machining from bar-stock aluminum? His "Classic" foot for the Medalist is, well, classic, and just to appease Joe Arguello, Bill'll even cut you one outta bronze if that does it for you. |

Now if Mike McCoy could work out a way to get his snakes and tops TNC coated in Bronze, Black, Pewter, Gunblue and Old Gold you guys could keep everybody
happy.
IMO hardware color is one aspect of the "pallette" that makes a rod's persona of whole cloth. I've seen pale rods with dark hardware and near-black blanks with bright hardware that looked good to my eye. How a rod turns out is the result of the craftsman's hand and his artist's eye. A rod showing honest wear but meticulous care has more heart than it did when first pulled from its tube. Mistakes are the Wellspring of Wisdom. As many as I make I expect to become quite wise if I live long enough. |

The ultimate finish would be... | #13

In my guesstimation the ultimate matte finish for fly rod hardware would be Mannox or a similar process. Tough, durable and rustproof. Given my experience
this finish would probably not show much wear. I am not sure that the EPA allows this surface finish process to be used in the USA though.

I like dark hardware and I like the way it mellows as it wares.
One thing that I don't like and don't understand is clear wraps with guide feet showing grind marks, unevenly ground feet, dark guide feet ground and not re-blued or colored after the grinding. It looks ugly and I don't understand why a maker would invest the time to meticulously build and clear wrap a rod only to leave poorly finished guide feet showing on purpose. |

Interesting...
The Bright Hardware is holding up ( 45% ) much better then I thought it would or has in the past... Are times a changing...?
