Boy, it sure is slow on the old rodbuilding forum so I guess I'll toss out a fly and see if anything rises to it. Down here at the headwaters of the Mighty
Rio Grande the fish are large and stupid, just like I like 'em, but there are many days during a season when if you aren't nymphing, you aren't
catching. These large foolish fish like large nymphs and wooly boogers in early June before the Stones start flying, sizes 8 and 10, might as well throw a
couple at them at once, but there are days on end when they basically refuse to acknowledge a dry. I have some strips ready to cook, they are long enough to
make an 8 footer, what are some of your suggestions for a dedicated nymph rod for medium large water, wide open casting and fish in the 15-20 inch range? Hope
the snow is melting, but the moisture sure is nice. Ray

Hi Ray,
Well after many years on the Big Horn River, MT I have found that the Dickerson 8013, 8ft 5 or 6wt. is the best general rod for that type of tail water. It fishes nymphs all year, 1/2 year dries, and streamers are effective almost anytime. The other (which is my favorite rod) is the Paraverage, its a little more of a faster action comparied to the 8013 but can still take the heavier rig and distance. The Paraverage Taper came from The Planing Form, Issue #95 Sept/Oct 2005. The taper was created by Tim Abbott and is a blend of the PHY Perfectionist and the Para 15. Paraverage 7'6" 2pc. 5/6wt. by Tim Abbott. 0 .070 .222 5 .090 .232 10 .108 .241 15 .212 .252 20 .136 .259 25 .150 .271 30 .170 .281 35 .188 .292 40 .205 .294 45 .222 .294 Hope that helps. Mike |

Payne 102 | #2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

All of our wild trout fishing here in my corner of the Southwest necessitates light line rods, but when I want to stretch out a little and fish some water I
can't jump across, I head for some West slope Sierra rivers, and wouldn't even bother to go without my 8', 5 weight Pyne 102 taper (taken from
Maurer's book). Deep, weighted nymphing is the game, and the Payne has some backbone, with smoooooothness!!

Nice Fish Doug, raises my blood pressure just looking at it...
Great suggestions so far and Mike brings up a good point, why Dedicate when you cane expand... But to answer the question, again I think the Garrison 212 would be my choice... Nice smooth, up front rod, nothing fancy and has the backbone to land the big one while protecting your tippet...
I sound like a big Garrison fan and I'm not nor do I nymph much, just the right tool for the job IMHO...
You got that right Ray... You would think out of the 150 people that pass thru here every day that someone would have some thing to say...

I am with Dave you cannot go far wrong with a Garrison 8ft
But please consider this also Paul Young Martha Marie. A real do anything rod. Iit casts short or long and has lots of back bone for those oversize fish.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I actually built a 212 as a gift rod (one of my first 4) and only lawn cast it, never had a chance to fish it. But the guy I
gave it to owes me one and I'll have a shot at trying it before too long. I'll try to let everybody knows how these things work out as we get into
fishing season as opposed to building season. Thanks again. Ray

Here's a modded Garrison 209E (7'9", 5wt., 2-piece) that would fit the bill. Its my favorite trout rod. Roll casts real well, casts real well
close in and can reach out to 50ft with no problems.

Bill,
Is that the same taper that I made a couple of tip sections for you? I still have not gotten around to making one for myself. Scott |

To be honest, my 209e hollow-built Garrison rod never really moved me as much as my Payne 102 hollow-built, which is magical. While bumming around over the
weekend, I tried a 4 DT Sylk line on the 209e forf kicks and I was amazed how smooth it felt. Took it for a thorough workout wild brook trout up to 3 pounds.
Amazing what finding the right line can for a rod.

Good point Joel and one I think a lot of people over look...
It is amazing what the right line can do for a rod... My go to lines are 444 peach & XPS blaze orange both in DT and I find they work well with most rods for both dry & wet fly. Every once in a while I'll come across a rod that needs something else, maybe a WF or a line weight up or down or what ever there's a line that will make it sing...
