I think there importing blanks from China and assembling them here which enables them to put a made in the USA label on them

I recently heard a rumor of who it was, but rumors being what they are...
It wasn't Dream Catcher Rods from what I was told. No proof was offered, but the rodmaker named made sense when I heard it. Not too many rodmakers can turn out a sizable quantity of rods, and it has to be someone ambitious enough to take this on. PM me if you are interested in the name I was given, but like I said I have no proof. Scott |

I ran into the guy who is doing this work about two years ago.
This is part of the email exchange I had with him. "I recently started doing OEM building for a bamboo rod company and all their repair work. This company imports blanks already built using mostly Garrison and Edwards tapers. They are less expensive because they are imports, but they are fairly nice blanks. They ship me packs of 20-30 blanks at a time and I build them out to finished rods. Keeps me busy enough that I'm thinking about hiring some help." He doesn't advertise he does this work. Guess you know why..... Scott

I am really glad we can have this conversation here. That other forum would have shut this down from post #1.

I saw this add in my old man's catalog (I don't get one, b/c I don't have a damn address to send anything to...). I think it's pretty cool,
myself, and says quite a bit about the popularity of bamboo rods. I was talking with Jerry Kustich about the demand for bamboo, mostly concerning the slow
economy. But, he mentioned he had a feeling the demand for bamboo would be greater, if there were simply more rods available to buy. He pointed out the waiting
list of most builders is a hindrance to those wanting a rod, now. He and other makers I've talked with (myself included), seem to think that more rods
would sell if they were just waiting to be picked up once there's cash on the barrel head. Oh jeese, I had a point...oh, yes, it will be interesting to see
if Cabella's and LL Bean's immediate supply of rods will increase the numbers of those fishing cane. Vewy intewesting...

My 2 cents worth is that if the blank is made in China,I don't care where it's finished out or by who! It's not made in the USA! Let's face it
the blank is the rod,the rest is just window dressing. The old adage,as far as I know it,has always been that if you make a rod from the culm forward you call
yourself a maker. If you finish out a blank that someone else made, you are called a builder. So if a rod is finished out in the USA but the blank came from
another country then in my book it's not made in the USA.
Does anyone else agree or am I just a curmudgeon?

I have mixed emotions but it's a case of picking your battles and looking at the big picture. Over all I think it's a good thing and will bring in
more people into BamBoo. If the blanks are made in China and built out the States it will come to light and reflect on the sellers. There are thousands of
Regional Builders today, not so ten years ago and just think in the next ten years and so on. So the Chinese have their work cut out for them and it will not
be an easy road, the cream will rise to the top...

Here's another warp on the whole scenario which might occur: A US company sets up a Granger/Heddon style factory and makes blanks which it then ships
overseas for cheap labor to finish out using quality components. Eventually they would move the factory overseas and focus on low margin volume while whatever
panache they had developed in their early years fades away.
Like Dave said, "The cream rises to the top." What I hope you guys see is, as the "vintage rod" market thins down to beaters, more mainstream flyfishers buy an entry level rod from the Big Box Web stores then move up to a top-line rod by a reputable maker. And, if the movie stays true to the book, "The River Why" may do for cane rods what "A River Runs Through It" did for/to flyfishing in general. (Dave, need an emoticon for "mixed emotions") Mistakes are the Wellspring of Wisdom. The trick is to not make a fatal one. |
