Posts: 20 04/16/09 04:20:36	Could someone clue me in on what I have done wrong? Silk is yli 100 white, burgundy tipping.I used flex coat lite thinned with alcohol equal parts. I put on one coat(using a needle) letting it sit for about 10 minutes and wiped of excess with my finger then put on a second coat and did the same thing.Now after putting 2 coats of thinned varnish I can see tiny vertical specs that are not transparent.The tops of the guide feet look great so I can't figure out why the flats didn't come out the same.I feel I used med. tension on the thread? Also, try using less thread tension to allow the varnish to penetrate more easily. Also, there is a huge void between the guides and the thread and flats, maybe try shoving varnish in that gap at the foot using a needle (if that was a problem area). I've only used flex coat a few times, and didn't try clear wraps. Also, try a light yellow or tan for a better clear wrap--maybe... And possibly oils from your hands are getting on the thread and keeping varnish from penetrating properly. Hope this helps somewhat. Hard to tell without being present or seeing what's going on. Posts: 16 05/17/09 05:57:36	Check the sewing thread sites for YLI Natural, sorry, I don't have the number anymore. Next to a spool of white it looks just slightly tan, gives much better results than white. Also, Diamondite on white doesn't work at all, makes the wrap have a blueish tint to it, really ugly. john

Posts: 8 05/18/09 13:59:16	I've had better luck using Flex Coat Lite without thinning it. Let the full strength finish sit on the wrap for a short time to thoroughly soak through, then use a fairly stiff, small brush to remove as much FC as possible. Finally burnish the wrap with lite pressure from a finger, wiping the finger clean between wipes. While I have no scientific proof I get the feeling that thinning the FC allows quick penetration but the thinner in the mix evaporates too quickly and may be a contributor to those "shimmers". Also, I've never had good transparency results using any silk other than Pearsalls white GOSSAMER. I'm sure there are those that use different brands, even slightly different colors as has been suggested, who have good results, but for me, Gossamer ALWAYS works. wbinn
