22 inches long, 11 1/2 inches in girth!!! The biggest fish I've caught in this stream! And I did it with an 8', 5 wt., 3/2 bamboo rod

And I would add a lot of skill and persistence.
I would like to know did you make the rod, whose taper, your own or one of the established makers? How long to land this log with fins and red spots? Which fly did you use? Which line? No, I won't ask where you caught the behemoth.
Congratulations! Gary |

The details... | #3 | ||

Gary: I used a Winston rod--my only really nice rod. It was the first rod made by Jeff Walker, when he finally sat down to design what he thought was the
perfect trout rod. It is a great rod. A wonderful rod. It has the standard, progressive Winston taper, but it has some reserve in the but that allows it a bit
more power when the wind is blowing--which it was in spades, while fighting this fish. I managed to talk Jeff out of the rod, after he let me use it during the
Cuttie-thon a few years ago. I fell in love with that rod after fishing it for more than 30 hours straight. I think the fight with the fish was 10 or so
minutes. I was using 3x tippet, and was able to muscle the fish a bit. I don't know what kind of line I was using. I used my friend's reel and line,
b/c he was using one of my rods, reel and line, and I neglected to bring another reel. I remembered the beer, though
. The line was blue, and about a decade old, cracked and scaley. I think it was a
S/A line, but Travis (my friend) didn't know, either. Travis had his video camera, and we got the whole thing on film. I hope to post a clip, once I get a
copy. The Brownie took a #8 Marathoner, with an orange tail. It's a streamer/nymph pattern I've been fishing for years, now, and have done rather well
with. I hooked in to a similar-sized Brown lower on the creek, but it busted me off. I was using the 3x tippet, but it was worn from hitting Russian Olives and
willows on occasion. I tied on new tippet and reattached my fly just before fishing the hole where I hooked this Brown. Finally, thought to do something
correct
Dave: I don't really hate to rub this in, but...today I am "field-testing" our little reservoir to try and catch some of the Westslope Cutts. that were planted in it. I fished it last night, and just caught Browns, that made it through the irrigation canal. I just hate it when I have to spend all day at work fishing with no clients ! Yesterday, our wait-staff was training
on how to make coffee drinks, then mixed drinks at the bar. So, I had myself a free almond cappuccino, then a 1/2 and 1/2 martini with a twist of lime a little
later that day--on the clock .
