I'm still a little gun shy.
You could ask a simple question about a rod over there and have two or three Moderators pile on you and accuse you of having an axe to grind with the maker or seller of the rod when you did not. Too many people misreading between the lines. I also saw the Sacred Cows make statements that would get someone else thrown off the forum and the post deleted so the mantra is do as we say not as we do.
I think if you have an experience with someone good or bad then you should be able to share it and I for one want to know the Good, Bad and the Ugly about equipment and purveyors, that's what forums are for, sharing information. We are not stupid and we can draw our own conclusions about the motivations of a poster with regard to information and experiences he posts, we don't need a moderator playing pre-school teacher.
The garbage about lawsuits is just that, Garbage and a smoke screen to allow unchecked censorship. They don't have the assets as individuals or a forum to cause anyone to expend the money necessary to bring such a suite and even if they did it would get tossed out faster then it came in.
I for one would like to see a Topic for ebay discussions here. I found the information very useful and educational but I am sure it was killed because they stepped on the toes of some Sacred Cow over there.
I think more people might participate here if we were sure it would not change into the same as the other forum down the road.
I believe that that forum will go commercial soon and they do not want to alienate any potential advertisers. With the membership and daily traffic they have that forum is worth big bucks but not big enough to attract a suite and it will probably be sold to a commercial enterprise. |

I am ready to post and ask beginner questions. I just did a post today on the Heddon Museum, something of local interest that I know about.
I hope I get answers. Denver Dave is the only one out there who has replied to my inquiry about planing forms. Must be you all use a sharp knife and a good eye to get your 60 degree strips. Gary

I guess I'll introduce myself, being new here and all. I've been fishing for a few decades. I started out when bamboo was still common. I have been
assembling rods almost as long as I have fished. I never successfully built a bamboo one from scratch, but the last time I tried, John Kennedy was president. I
was a development engineer in the semiconductor manufacturing trade for most of my working life, so I tend to look at things from a technical side and I'm
used to asking why not when somebody claims a process can't work. I mixed and matched paint for a few years after my job was out-sourced, and now I have
become retarded... I can't remember to go to work, so I just stay home and have fun. I am about to make another attempt at putting together a bamboo rod.
This time there are actually people out there that have revealed many of the secrets my brother and I couldn't fathom the last time I tried. I will most
likely ask some pretty dumb questions, and I'm sure I'll question at least some of the sacred myths.
The reference to Ebay topics makes me think that I know which board you are all so disgusted with. I haven't had any unpleasant experiences there, but I'm new and may not know any better. Larry L. |

I have heard this from several local members, that is why I ask the question. I must admit I to am very careful as to what I post in this PC World, to the
point I feel like I'm walking on egg shells so I say nothing and move on. That's the reason for this board, to restore Our First Amendment Right, get
back to the basics, "Mind your own Business" and have some fun as it's only a Forum. If you feel this way I ask you come on in, sit down and
share your idea's, thoughts and/or advise with others. To date there are no Mods and I'm very interested in keeping it that way, albeit no one knows
what the future will bring I prefer to look at the glass as half full and go from there...
As far as Ebay, I know it's a 50/50 love/hate thing so let's hear your thoughts on the subject...
Make the "What Do I Have" board a "What's Up On Ebay" board...
Make a new board for "What's Up On Ebay and leave "What Do I Have" alone
Put Ebay in the Title of the thread so other's can make up there own mind as to if you want to read the thread...
Hang the first guy that mentions Ebay..."-)
Where we go from here is up to us, so let's hear from You...

I would like to have people weigh in with their observations of the ebay market place for classic bamboo fly
rods and classic fly reels.

I looked at your sample rod pictures. Very nice work, I like the wrap colors and grip shape and mosaic work on the butt cap is very nice. What do you do in sub-6ft. rods, the shorter the better and multiple piece portables? Maybe a 5' 5/2, #5 or 6 wt. I think there is a big market nitch for rods like this and no one seems too special in them. I think makers are missing the boat, to many makers making the same thing and the difference is small and like custom knives they are beginning to flood the market. Only the makers that get a name following seem to be doing that well. I will only buy classics in popular lengths and configurations because they are the best bang for the buck and retain or gain value more easily on a resale. I know that short rods and short pack rods generally get a bad rap on the other forum but when they show up anywhere they sell fast and bring good money. I think the new bamboo fly fishing generation is embracing those rods more then their longer counterparts. I would not fish a bamboo rod longer then 7'6" and I have only fished the one I have once in the last decade. I can cast and fish as well with my 5' rod as I can with the 7'6". Let me know if you have any plans to make any short pack rods 4-5 or 6 wt., I don't like lines lighter then 4wt. In My Opinion, Cyrus |

cyrus,6'6" is the shortest 2/2 i make but i do make a 7' 3/2 4 wt. that i like to describe as "what if granger made a 7' 3/2".here
in the north west every one hammers me for longer rods and heavyer rods.like my 8'6" 8wt.very heavy strong rod for steelhead and salmon.right now i am
working on developing a 7'9" 4wt.star hollow built and a 12' 7wt spay. and starting some 8' 5wt star hollow built rods to get out before

The Truth Sometimes Hurts | #15 | ||
|
I was never chastised on the other board. But then again, I never really tested the limits. I can't say that I am gun shy. I am just glad that there is an
open alternative to constant threats and censorship. There are certain aspects of a bamboo rod that are subjective, like action. Everyone has a preference and
there is really no right or wrong. There are other things, like workmanship and customer service, that are more quantitative. One complaint by a member would
not turn me away from a builder. However, where there is smoke there is usually fire. If several members had the same opinion regarding quality or service, I
would take notice and consider myself warned. The truth sometimes hurts...and it should. All of the rod builders I know are wonderful and honest people. They
are artisans who want their work products to be useful and beautiful. I own rods from several members and hope to add rods of some other members at some point.
A good builder has many satisfied customers who would gladly fight against the specious complaints of the few jerks. Happy trails! st_vrain
