What's everyone using for emerald green whippings with spar varnish.
Looking for favourites what would everyone recommend?

Dave - what do you use as color preserver? My 'emerald' turns almost black as soon as varnish penetrates.

Dave, You also have an absolutely gorgeous rod with blue wraps pictured on your website. I'm building a bamboo spinning rod for my non-fly fishing brother
and I'd like to try for a similar finish. Care to share another trade secret? How do you preserve that true color w/spar. As somebody else mentioned
already, whenever I try a dark color, such as blue or green, it turns dark brown as soon as I apply spar varnish without CP.
Thanks, Joel |

Well Joel ... First off you start with colors much lighter then the desired color in most cases...
The rod you talk of was wrapped with vintage SunSet 00 nylon ( there I go again ) and I had just enought to finish that rod... Did some checking around and think the PacBay Rodsmith Nylon in Sky Blue ( Y100A-SB ) will do the trick... Anothor thing to keep in mind that rod was flamed and that also effects the finish color... If you doing a blond ( that sounds funny ) I would go with a Medium Blue...

I just recieved a thread shipment on Monday of various YLI threads. The 219 and 220 both look very nice in test wraps, both a rich emerald green when finished
with Ace spar varnish, no color preserver. The 219 is my favorite, the 220 a bit darker, but not near black. Got great service and prices from Larry at High
Sierra Rods on the order. It was good to have a chance to meet some of you in Denver. Ray
