Para 14 or true parabolic 4wt. |
Lead | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Does anyone have experience with the Para 14? Is it a true 4wt or is it a 5 wt.? Seems lately I don't have any luck getting a true 4wt. I ordered a
fiberglass blank that should have been a 4wt. and it actually a 5wt. Built out a Payne 100 couple of years ago that turned out to be a 5wt. I would love to get
a blank for a true 4wt. boo that was either 7'9" or 8'0" and parabolic. Any ideas on what taper could give me that?

Well if your talk'n Parabolics Mr Young is first to my mind... The Para 14 by the numbers is a 5w, unless you tone it down... The Martha Marie by the numbers is a 5w, unless you tone it down... The Driggs River, now that's a true 4w and one of my Favorites... It's 7'2" but has the authority of a 7.5' or 8' rod...

The Driggs River, now that's a true 4w and one of my Favorites... Interesting you stay that because my Driggs River throws a 5wt better. It's nodeless and they tend to be a bit stiffer that could be the reason. I guess this isn't helping the inital topic question of the post at all.
Don't have any experince with a para 14 but you might look into the Young Perfectionist. I know it is not a 7'9 or 8' but it is one of the most Parabolic actions that I've experienced and it is a strong 4wt. Good luck Mike |

The Para 14 is the best one to go for.
But as Dave said it would need to be dropped a line size. Gary

Thanks for the info on parabolics guys. I do know how they feel as I have a midge that I built up from a blank and have cast other people's parabolics. I
love certain parabolics and semi paras. One of the things I'm concerned about with dropping a Para14 one line weight is winding up with 3/4 as opposed to a
solid 4 because I've noticed a lot of PHY's tapers seemed to fall almost on a half weight as they seemed to be optimized for silk line weights. I
modified a Driggs taper a couple years ago by dropping it a line weight and it wound up a little wimpier than I expected. I wonder if there is some more
adjustment that needs to be made when dropping a parabolic one line weight as opposed to doing it with a more linear taper?

Here's the Para-14 dropped a line wt to a 4. I've built one of these and it was a four out to 35-40 feet but I thought a little too soft in the butt.
More a 3/4 depending on how far you wanted to cast. If I build another I'll build something closer to Chris Carlin's
0" = 068 5" = .080, 10" = .095 15" = .110 20" = .128 25" = .143 30" = .159 35" = .176 40" = .193 45" = .208 50" = .216 55" = .226 60" = .231 65" = .239 70" = .247 75" = .256 80" = .262 85" = .266 90" = .266 93" = .266 Chris Carlin makes a Para-13. You can find his taper here.. http://rodbuildingforum.com/index.php?act=special&page=taperview&id=47 The Para-13 was a speciality rod supposedly the most parabolic rod Paul Young ever made. "PHY custom-built Para 13, 7'9", date unknown or not recorded. From MJK's description: "Built for Mr. O.S. Wood of Michigan who reportedly had a very bad medical problem with his shoulder. His son brought him to see Paul Young who built this rod specifically to allow him to continue fishing w/a minimum of discomfort. The rod shaft is marked 'Parabolic 13 7'9" 2.95 oz. HEH line' Also marked 'Fer. 13/64 Tip Tops 4/64 Orville S. Wood Ann Arbor Mich.'" One lightweight dry tip (with red spiral wrapping at tip top) and one heavier tip (green wraps at tip top). Flamed cane, lime green wraps, 2x2 node arrangement, half Wells grip, dual band cork reel seat, second tip ΒΌ" short but apparently built exactly this way. Orig. bag & tube. MJK catalog 84 (2002). Dave,
I don't think Chris's Para-13 is the original taper. I think he dropped the Para-14 to a 4wt and then modified the taper or something like that. I have located the original #'s and the gentleman who has them is sending me a copy as soon as he finds them.....messy divorce and his rod stuff is still packed away. He says it's three pages including Marty Keane's notes. Here's the full Para-13 description from Keane's catalog #84.... http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e390/Dennishigham/Para-13description_edited-1.jpg Dennis |
