Posts: 180 11/06/09 08:33:23	Good new Jack has reprinted an updated version of the Lovely Reed, self published by Jack Howell. It is my understanding that Alan Kube was gracious enough help with the financing and Daryll helped Jack also. Kudos to Alan and Daryll for that. Anyway here is a link to Jacks order form. Al Kube of Denver has provided the financial impetus, Daryll Whitehead has helped me immensely in researching and reorganizing the sources section, and I'm just waiting for a new ISBN. Thompson-Shore, the original printer of the book, has a good graphics production computer specialist who is working with me, and we've located all the original fonts, and they will use all the same specs as the first printing. Posts: 37 11/06/09 09:20:46	Not good news for those who just paid over $1,000.00 for the book and may want to sell it one day. I and many others have been burnt by profiteering authors who reprint books that have gone through thru roof in price and sell them for far less then the current market. I was burnt once when I purchased a used book from the author who sold it for ten times the price he reprinted the book for six months later and which he had stated he would not reprint when selling the copy I purchased at a show. An author should consider the current market price before pricing a reprint and flooding the market. I see most of these books currently selling between $1,200.00 to $500.00 and the reprint will drop these prices to maybe $100.00 to $150.00 for a first edition when the reprint is selling for $60.00.

Posts: 5 11/08/09 18:24:07	Cyrus, I have hesitated to respond to your post, out of concern that I might be misunderstood, but let me try. No one wants to be left holding a depreciated asset, be it a bond or a book, but buying an out of print book today, hoping that it will be worth more tomorrow, is speculative. As such, sometimes you get the chicken, sometimes the feathers... The book belongs to Jack Howell. It is his property to do with as he wants. We have no constraints on him, and should hope that he is able to see some financial gain from his work.Can you imagine how much effort is involved in writing? I have a hard time composing this reply!! And a fine book it is. In my estimation, the very best of its type. You can get all the nuts and bolts about rod building from Cattanach or Mauerer, but "The Reed" presents the mind set of successful crafting in a readable and understandable way. After about 2 dozen rods i think I know what to do, but this book helps with the "how", at least it has me. And if I really, really dont feel motivated to spend time in the "shop", reading a bit from this book renews my sense of purpose. As such, it is a shame that too many of the multitudes of hobby builders have been priced out of buying this book. Greater availability will help the craft. At $1000/$1200 you have more money then brains... ghstrydr164, I'll take all the first editions you got for $100/$150... On the other note... Instead, he is keeping the price affordable out of service to those that want to get into the craft. Seems the opposite of your accusation. FWIW, I happen to know Jack DID consider the "current market price" before pricing the reprint. He opted for affordability. Jack is imparting information, not market-controlling a collector's item. On second thought, I guess he is selling at "current market price." As the word "current" implies, "market price" is a variable thing. "Current market price" is now $60 (shipping included). That a recent buyer may have gotten burned is the nature of things. I fail to see how that is Jack's responsibility. FWIW, I spoke to Alan Kube about this project. He told me how many books were in the first run and how much Jack made per copy. Like most things that we do in this craft, if you are doing it for money you will be sorely disappointed. Jack didn't make NEAR as much as he deserved. To suggest that Jack is somehow taking advantage of the bamboo-rod-crafting world is ridiculous. I'd be willing to bet that there are folks that made as much re-selling first edition copies as Jack did writing it. Lastly, anyone could have emailed Jack and asked if he intended a reprint before dropping a grand on a used copy. I emailed Jack a year ago, and was told he did intend to reprint. Tyler
